Wayward Son - Rainbow Rowell
I don’t remember the last time I have anticipated the release of a book as much as this one. It is a brilliant book about situations that we all have wondered about. The main question being this: “What happens to The Chosen One after he finishes what he was Chosen to do?” For years, heroes spend their lives completing their destiny and fighting battles that they are too young for, but what happens after? When the villain dies, when the curtain falls what life can the hero make for himself?
This book is a sequel to Carry On which was originally introduced as fanfiction in one of Rowell’s previous novels. I think the reason we all love a good
fanfiction is that the possibility is endless, in real life and in novels the author must stick to the script and do what works best for the literature. In fanfiction, we can day-dream and spin the story the way we want to. It's freestyle writing, it’s letting our dreams soar. And that’s the concept Rowell has embraced with this book. It’s not a typical ending, and they are not typical characters. I mean his name’s Simon for god’s sake.
This book is brilliant, not only for its action scenes that are heart racing but also because of the description of the relationships between Simon and Baz. Fighting wars affects people, which is also a concept that has come out beautifully in this book. Their magnificent road trip across America is so realistically explained it feels like I was right there in the car with them. I loved this book, definitely, the best Rowell has written so far.
